Religious Instruction
Religion Classes
Children of all religious faiths are welcome to enroll. In recent years, over 75% of our students have come from non-Lutheran backgrounds, including Roman Catholics, other Protestant denominations, non-practicing families, and those from other religious traditions. Religion classes consist mainly of learning Bible stories and seeing how theose lessons can apply to our lives today. Emphasis is placed on Jesus’ two main commandments: “Love the Lord your God; and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” Those two commands can give a focus and a purpose to life.
Materials used in religion classes are published by our Lutheran church body. However, it is not our goal to proselytize through our instruction, but to support the spiritual growth of our students. We encourage families to worship at the church of their choice. Students are required to participate in the all religious and worship activities here at school.
School Worship Life
- Student Worship Life: An important part of the Christian education that we offer to a child is the opportunity to participate in a rich worship life. A child is to become aware that his or her entire life should itself be an act of worship.
- Chapel: The entire student body meets weekly for a corporate worship service. Students offer personal prayers of petition and thanksgiving. We collect an offering for a special quarterly mission project to give students an opportunity to share their material blessings with those in need in our community and around the world. Members of the staff take turns leading chapel services. Periodically classrooms lead chapel.
- Classroom Devotions: School days at First Lutheran always start with a brief devotion. Students are often given the opportunity to either lead or be a major part of these opening devotions. At noon we ask God’s blessing on our meal. The end of the day we offer a prayer thanking God for the blessings of the day.
- School Advent Program: Each year, in preparation of our remembrance of Christ’s birth, choirs and music groups are scheduled to participate in a Wednesday evening Advent service.
- Sunday Worship: As one way of thanking our congregation for its ongoing support of the school, students are asked to participate in Sunday morning worship services several times each year.
